Your front door is the entrance to your home, and the space outside around it should reflect what guests expect to see once they step inside. If your front door and front garden are scruffy, messy and lacking any kind of attention to detail, it doesn’t say much about what the inside of your home will look like. As we move into autumn, the outside of our homes require a bit more effort on our part to keep them looking well and welcoming. If you know you need to address this issue yourself, here’s some advice on how to keep your front door looking great this autumn.
Clean, repaint or re-stain your front door
Keep your front door looking great with some essential maintenance this autumn. If your front door is a GRP composite material, it’s very easy to keep clean – it just needs a simple wash with some warm soapy water and a soft sponge. If your front door is mahogany, this is traditionally a very durable wood so you can retain the natural beauty of the wood by varnishing, or staining your door to protect it from the elements this winter. Don’t forget to pay attention to the letterbox, door knocker and handles too, and check your locks, latches and hinges for signs of wear and tear.
Sweep up autumn debris
Autumn may be full of colour from the changing leaves, but when they fall they can make a mess of the garden, not to mention being very dangerous and slippery when wet. Keep your front door area looking clean and tidy with regular brushing and raking to get rid of the leaves and other autumn debris that might blow in.
Replace pots of flowers and hanging baskets
During the summer you might have had pots of colourful flowers or hanging baskets adorning either side of your front door. In the autumn, these are likely to die off leaving behind unattractive brown twigs in their place. Make sure to replace these pots with shrubs or green plants which can survive the colder months, so that your front door still looks dressed and well-cared for.
Upgrade your lighting
Porch lighting is a beautiful addition to the entrance of your home, and you can tailor it to the amount of space you have available in your own property. If you have enough space, adding overhead lighting can be a stylish and luxurious touch to your front entrance. For a more practical lighting solution, wall sconces to either side of your front door are also a welcoming addition to your home’s entrance, and with lots of styles available you can easily match these to the style of your home and front door. If you don’t have room for these, or you don’t like the thought of adding a permanent feature to your home, why not try this idea of filling some ornate lanterns with solar chargeable fairy lights?
